Annette Brooke MP was pleased to support Empower, the national disability charities consortium, at a reception to launch its new campaign recently.
The title of the event 'Joining up NHS and Community Services', provided an opportunity for users, healthcare professionals and decision makers to come together to discuss the way forward to mobility, rehabilitation services and independence in the community and out of hospital.
Empower, supported by over 40 disability charities, aims to 'empower' disabled people by ensuring that they have access to equipment which can help them live a more full and mobile life. For so many, rehabilitation services and specialist equipment is not always readily available or 'joined up' with other community based services.
MPs, including Annette Brooke MP, have tabled a motion in the House of Commons pressing the government to act upon the recommendations made in two reports by the Audit Commission which severely criticise the provision of second-rate equipment for elderly and disabled people.
Annette Brooke said:
"I congratulate Empower on the excellent work the charity has done to raise the profile of rehabilitation and mobility services for the disabled and elderly.
"The report by the Audit Commission's report shows how deficient services can be. We must press the government to act on the report's recommendations to secure better equipment and services that disabled and elderly people deserve."
