Local MP Annette Brooke, today expressed support for people with dementia and their carers in Mid Dorset and North Poole, in the run up to Alzheimer's Awareness Week.
The theme of the week, which will run from 6-12 July 2003, is "Mind Your Head". The Alzheimer's Society will be focusing on the risk factors which may increase someone's likelihood of developing dementia and the practical steps that we can all take to try and lower our risk.
Pledging her support for this very important campaign, Annette Brooke said:
"I am very happy to be supporting the Alzheimer's Society in their Awareness Week. Dementia affects one in five people over the age of 80 and understanding some of the risk factors will enable us all to be more proactive about taking steps to protect our health."
It is estimated that more than 760 people living in Mid Dorset and North Poole have dementia and more than three times that number, family, friends and carers are affected by the consequences of the condition.
Unfortunately, anyone can develop dementia, at any age, including those who have a low risk lifestyle, however, there are some sensible lifestyle changes that may reduce these risks.
Research suggests that there are strong links between a healthy heart and a healthy brain. As for many diseases, medical research recommends that you: don't smoke; take regular exercise; consume alcohol in moderation; eat plenty of fruit and vegetables; reduce your intake of salt and saturated fat; have your GP check your blood pressure and cholesterol levels and that you maintain an active social life, with plenty of interests and hobbies.
