The New Suffragettes - Women in Parliament in the 21st Century
Annette Brooke, the only female MP in Dorset, yesterday attended the launch of a new book written for women in parliament, about women in parliament and entitled "Women in Parliament". Since the 1997 General Election, the number of women MPs has increased considerably. The election into Parliament of so many more women marked a significant change in their role in parliament and more crucially, their influence in the corridors of power.
The book includes interviews with 83 female MPs, including Annette Brooke, and is a record of the impressions formed by women MPs of Parliament as an institution and of its workings.
Commenting on the book's publication, Annette Brooke said:
"I wish that such a book had been available when I was first elected, so that I had had a better idea of the "boys' club" that is Westminster when I arrived here. This is truly a fascinating record of what it is like to be a woman MP at the end of the twentieth century."
Annette is also quoted in the book as saying:
"I'm convinced if we had more women in Parliament, it would be less confrontational. I think the public would appreciate that there was serious debate going on and would perhaps get more involved. People really like having a female MP - it's certainly my experience - feeling that they listen and are approachable. It does seem to make a difference."
