Local MP, Annette Brooke, and her Liberal Democrat colleagues have called for the international community to take immediate action on the crisis in Darfur.
Speaking on Crisis Action's 'Global Day for Darfur' Annette said:
"It is vital that we not forget the ongoing problems in Darfur and our obligations as part of the international community.
"The already desperate humanitarian situation in the region is worsening daily, with the Sudanese Government failing to protect its citizens and the under-resourced African Union troops unable to carry out their security commitments.
"If the Khartoum regime recklessly continues to obstruct the will of the UN Security Council in accepting UN peacekeepers in Darfur, the EU must be willing to consider targeted sanctions.
"The 'Global Day for Darfur' must therefore serve as a catalyst for the international community to act decisively - we must not fail the people of Darfur as we failed the people of Rwanda nearly 12 years ago."
