Annette Brooke MP speaks up for Dorset Farepak customers

November 7, 2006 12:00 AM

Local MP Annette Brooke spoke today in Parliament on the collapse of the Farepak hamper firm which has affected many of her constituents.

The parliamentary debate was packed with MPs from all over the country, all expressing their disgust at the course of events which has led to hundreds of thousands of people losing their own savings towards Christmas.

Many MPs commented on the fact that they had never seen such a well attended debate in Westminster Hall.

Annette Brooke said:

"The most important issue to address for our vulnerable and responsible constituents - who have lost their savings due to the action or inaction of people in positions of responsibility - is to get a rescue package in time for Christmas.

All the other actions such as a full inquiry into the events leading up to Farepak going into liquidation and the need to change legislation must follow closely behind."

Minister for Consumer Affairs, Ian McCartney, echoed this view when he talked about setting up a national fund and suggested MPs should contribute along with as many businesses as possible. He also promised no stone would be left unturned. The Minister will be issuing full details tomorrow in a written statement.

Annette plans to make a contribution and calls on all local businesses to do the same.

If you are a resident of the constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
