Annette at Fairtrade Fortnight

Annette speaks with local residents about the global benefits of Fairtrade

Fairtrade issues were top of the agenda this week as local residents joined a meeting organised by Annette Brooke MP.

The local MP organised a special meeting for constituents to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight and to share their experiences and views on wider development issues. Over 70 constituents attended the meeting which was held at Broadstone Methodist Church on Saturday 3 March.

Annette, the Liberal Democrat MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, said:

"This high attendance shows that there is a real interest amongst my constituents on issues surrounding global poverty and a willingness to support worthwhile initiatives."

Presentations were given by local residents who spoke about their personal experiences of working in developing countries.

The Rev. Charles Meachin spoke about his experience supporting an Indian village since 1972. He has made many visits there over the years and his latest venture is to provide a library for the village.

Sharen Green spoke about her three months with the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel. Her work centred on accompanying Palestinians and Israelis in their non-violent work to end the occupation.

Phil Dowding spoke about his work in Malawi and Ethiopia which included helping with the construction of houses. Annette also had the opportunity to speak herself about her recent trip to Rwanda and Kenya where she visited health and microfinance projects.

The Fairtrade meeting was generally considered a great success by all who attended. Building upon the achievements of this year's Fairtrade Fortnight, Annette is considering making it an annual event

Annette said:

"There are a number of constituents who go out to developing countries or support projects overseas. This has been a great opportunity for people to learn what others are doing who live nearby and to share their experiences. It would be wonderful if we could offer up the same opportunity next year."

If you are a resident of the constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
