Annette Brooke with Chris Huhne and Edward Davey at the Zimbabwe Protest
Annette Brooke MP today joined a host of MPs and Zimbabwean citizens to call on the Government to allow failed Zimbabwean asylum seekers to work.
Annette joined the protest on behalf of her constituent Williard Tendai Chinhanhu from Lychett Matravers, and went with 7 other MPs to 10 Downing Street to deliver a plea to Gordon Brown.
Willard is a member of Poole Runners, and prior to leaving Zimbabwe he was an international marathon runner. As a failed asylum seeker he receives no benefits and despite his skills he is not allowed to work and so is reliant on charity. He cannot return to Zimbabwe under the current political and economic conditions.
Commenting, Annette Brooke said 'It is scandalous that several thousand Zimbabweans, including doctors, nurses and teachers, are trapped - not allowed to work even on a temporary basis. They currently can only survive on charity, but are eager to work and to use their skills and training for the benefit of Britain. In Williard's case he could be helping to train young people for the Olympics'
