Annette Challenges Minister to Come Clean on Green Belt Policy

January 22, 2009 10:55 AM

South West residents listen to speakersMid Dorset and North Poole MP Annette Brooke has called upon Government ministers to come clean about their plans to build on green belt land within the constituency.

Speaking in Parliament, Annette asked what assurances the Government could give about the method in which they were assessing the green-belt issues. Responding the Minister, Iain Wright, said the Government were committed to 'protecting the countryside' but would not be drawn on any further on the implications for the South West and constituents of Mid Dorset and North Poole.

Commenting Annette said 'I am frustrated that the Minister will not commit publicly to the protection of our green-belt land.'

There is considerable concern in the area about the Regional Spatial Strategy for the South West, which would see about 48,000 new homes being built in the area, 2,750 being built in Lychett Minster alone. In addition, green belt land in Wimborne and Corfe Mullen is threatened by development proposals.

Yesterday Annette joined a cross party group of MP's at a meeting with Iain Wright, the Minister responsible for the SW Regional Spatial Strategy. Whilst the Minister was unable to comment on specific issues Annette said she was able to raise significant points with him.

Commenting Annette said - 'We pointed out that the 3.2% growth rate assumption in the strategy was nonsense in today's climate and hence the high growth targets for housing should be scrapped.

I also expressed my opposition to the proposed large scale urban extensions in the green belt which I do not believe will address our real needs for small scale development of affordable housing.

However, despite constraints on the Minister as to what he is allowed to say at this stage of the process, it was a constructive meeting, providing yet another opportunity for me to make my constituents voices heard.'

If you are a resident of the constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
