Annette Brooke, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Children, Schools and Families yesterday called on the Government to look at their long term approach to child abuse.
In a Parliamentary Question session for the Department of Children Schools and Families Annette challenged the Government over their training for safeguarding children. Raising the issue with Beverly Hughes, Minister of State for Children Young People and Families, Annette claimed that the Government's current system works like a 'fire brigade'.
Speaking on the matter Annette said 'The Government needs to look at its long term strategies not just short term reactive measures. Regular training in safeguarding for the whole of the children's work force is crucial to reducing the number of incidents of child abuse.
At the moment the Government just rushes from one emergency to the next, it needs to produce a long term, structured programme which gives training and support to all those involved in safeguarding children. I am pleased to hear that the Government will be providing leadership training for directors of children's services and managers, but what about everyone else - particularly those who must identify abuse on a daily basis?'
