After more than 200 letters of complaint and pressure from local groups, Poole Council has backed down over plans to build a Travellers' site in Ashington.
Ashington had been short listed as the only possible site in Poole Borough, which makes this announcement from the council even more surprising. However, it is unclear as to whether these plans have been fully scrapped or simply shelved for a later date.
Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole commented:
"I am delighted that Poole Council seems to have seen sense on this issue. I have received a huge number of letters from concerned residents on this issue, as have the Liberal Democrat Councillors in the area, and we have worked together in representing these views to the Council.
"However, as I understand it, the site at Ashington remains the only one on the shortlist. I am pleased that the council will now consider alternative sites in the area, and will be a lot happier with the situation once these sites have been announced. As I have previously pointed out to Poole Council, local councils are encouraged to work with neighbouring authorities in locating sites such as these. Yet up until now Poole have refused to do this.
