Annette Brooke MP yesterday attended a reception at 10 Downing Street hosted by the Prime Minister's wife, Sarah Brown, to celebrate the invention of Braille in its 200th year with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB)
Annette has campaigned alongside the RNIB for a number of years on a number of issues which affect her constituents.
At the reception it was announced that the Government are to set up a pilot project in three local authority areas to improve access to textbooks for visually impaired young people.
Commenting Annette said:
"This is an issue that I have been campaigning on with the RNIB for a long time and I am delighted that this project is finally taking off. I am hopeful that in time, it can be rolled out across the country, allowing more visually impaired people the access to information that is crucial to their education."
"The work that the RNIB does in promoting the right of visually impaired people to academic books is so important. An RNIB report found that only 12% of maths books and 8% science GCSE textbooks in England were available in Braille or large print . This simply isn't enough. I wholeheartedly support any steps that can be taken to allow visually impaired people the chance of a well-rounded and easily accessible education."
