The head of highways and transportation at Dorset County Council has said that enforcement and engineering are necessary on this part of the road. He also said that work on policing the road is ongoing as were such improvements as the possible removal of vegetation.
Following the two deaths on the road this year some members of the performance overview committee have called for a progress report on measures being taken to improve safety on the road. Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset & North Poole has written to Dorset County Council demanding action on this issue 9 times in the last year.
Driver error has been named as the most common cause of collisions, a fact that has lead Annette to call for roadside signs highlighting the collision record on the road to improve driver awareness of the dangers. In the past the Council have rejected the suggestion of roadside signs due to the view that they are unnecessary 'clutter', however, this most recent acknowledgement of a need for improvements may mean the Council is finally starting to recognise the need for action. "This is long over due" commented Annette, "I hope that we will see some real action now."
