Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Children, Annette Brooke has tabled a Parliamentary Motion calling for the Government to scrap its 'online directory' of all children in England, as it has been recently revealed to have major safety flaws in it.
ContactPoint is an information system designed to integrate access for children's services and staff. However, the Liberal Democrats have called for the system to be removed as it has been revealed that there are major flaws in its security. Some 55,000 vulnerable children could have their details accessed; this includes victims of domestic violence, adopted children and those who are in witness protection schemes. The Joseph Rowntree Reform Foundation has also identified the system as being 'almost certainly illegal under international human rights law.'
The system is already estimated to cost £224 million since its inception in 2003, and has had its implementation halted several times.
Commenting Annette said 'I am very concerned about the fundamental flaws in this system and so have called on the Government to abandon it.
'ContactPoint is not best way to protect our children and young people and it is not a proportional response to the problem in question. We cannot have some of our most vulnerable people being put at risk; this situation as it stands is deeply worrying.'
