Local MP Annette Brooke, a member of the Children's Schools and Families Select Committee, today welcomed its Report to the Government that the National Curriculum is over complicated, lacks continuity and is too tightly controlled by Whitehall.
The report, published on Thursday 2nd April, makes some major recommendations for improvements to the National Curriculum which was introduced to schools over 20 years ago. Alongside recommendations that National Strategies should be discontinued and that it should be slimmed down, it also criticises the way in which schools enjoy different levels of freedoms with regards what they teach. It is felt that more freedoms should be extended to schools and a greater level of trust should be placed in the teaching profession.
Commenting as a member of the Select Committee, Annette said:
For too long the National Curriculum has been like a strait-jacket for some schools, letting down both teachers and pupils.
The Government now needs to respond to this report, and ensure a rich educational experience for all children country wide. The learning journey for 0 to 19 year olds is not static and cannot be dictated from Whitehall, it is essential that the Government take on board these recommendations and realises that over prescription and target setting does not work.'
