Local MP Annette Brook is supporting Breakthrough Breast Cancer's Constant Reminder? Living with Lymphoedema campaign by calling for the local Primary Care Trust to confirm both the provision of and access to Lymphoedema services in the Mid Dorset and North Poole area.
The campaign aims to ensure all breast cancer patients suffering from Lymphoedema have quicker access to the highest quality services and that sufficient local services are available to meet their needs.
ï'§ Lymphoedema is an incurable and sometimes painful and debilitating swelling, commonly in the arm, which can occur after come breast cancer treatments.
ï'§ Approximately 1 in 5 patients who undergo breast cancer surgery go on to develop Lymphoedema in their arm.
ï'§ The condition can make it difficult to carry out everyday tasks such as getting dressed, having a cuddle or sending an email.
Breakthrough Breast Cancer has heard from patients with Lymphoedema that many of them are experiencing long waits and insufficient services to see specialists.
Annette says: 'Lymphoedema services for these women need real improvement and that's why I am supporting Breakthrough Breast Cancer in their 'Constant Reminder?' campaign. By making sure that PCT's have the necessary services in place to treat the thousands of patients with the condition both quickly and to the highest possible standards, we can make sure that anyone who develops Lymphoedema following breast cancer can get on with their lives.'
