Annette Brooke MP succeeds in making the Government clamp down on rogue mobile home site owners.

May 13, 2009 5:16 PM

Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, is celebrating after launching a successful bid in Parliament last week to protect the rights of park home owners wishing to sell their properties.

Following Brooke's 10 Minute Rule Bill the Government have recognised that some park sites are not being vetted by local authorities and have subsequently initiated a duty to be placed on councils to impose management conditions in licences and ensure that such conditions are complied with.

Annette was keen to take up the cause after receiving several representations from constituents with concerns about the management of one site in particular; she felt compelled to take the issue up in Parliament in order to prevent site owners 'sabotaging' the sales of mobile homes.

Reports from all over the country indicate that park home owners are being offered the market price for their property, often of £100,000 or more, but following an interview with the site owner - which is usually required - the offer is withdrawn and the site owner is able to put in a substantially lower one of £15,000 or less.

Annette said: 'I was extremely concerned that rogue site owners could use interviews with prospective buyers to make misleading or untrue statements to block sales. I am delighted the Government has now recognised the concerns of my constituents and others across the country and I have been pleased with the amount of cross party support I have received on this matter.'

She was also keen to express that most of Dorset's many mobile home sites should be commended for their excellent services and business attributes. 'Mobile Home Sites are a welcome addition to Dorset's local economy and many are providing a first-rate service. With this new regulation I am confident we can ensure the unscrupulous actions of a few will be reprimanded and their standards raised to join the majority of their fellow sites in Dorset, which act in a fair and ethical manner.

The Government now plans to transfer the jurisdiction on appeals and applications under the Mobile Homes Act 1983 from county courts to Residential Property Tribunals.

If you are a resident of the constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
