Vince Cable in Wimborne
The Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor Vince Cable packed out a local meeting when over 300 residents came to hear him speak at a recent event in Wimborne. "It was a great success" said Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset & North Poole, who introduced Vince, "he is an excellent speaker and really engaged the audience."
Vince, who recently won the Channel 4 Opposition Politician of the year award and published a book on the economic crises, described how our economy has been through a "severe heart attack" recently and will take time to recover. When low interest rates, which he described at present as "economic steroids," start to rise again, families and businesses may struggle more he said.
A wide range of topics were covered in the question and answer session towards the end of the evening. Vince reaffirmed the Liberal Democrat commitment to holding a referendum on the UK's membership of the EU and criticised both Labour and the Tories for failures to realistically address public spending. Annette Brooke, who answered some local questions, commented on Government plans to build on the Green Belt and the Lib Dem's commitment to scrap the plans.
