Meningitis and septicaemia are deadly diseases that affect an estimated 3,000 people in the UK each year and can kill in under 4 hours.1 Children and babies under 5 years old are most at risk of contracting these infections because their immune system is not yet fully developed.
An event at the Houses of Parliament highlighted the devastating human impact of meningitis and septicaemia, how infections can be prevented, new developments in vaccine research and the importance of national vaccination programmes.
Annette Brooke stated that "Infectious diseases like meningitis and septicaemia have major implications for public health and I am delighted to lend my support to the vital work of the meningitis charities in raising awareness of these very serious conditions."
