Annette has joined the 10:10 campaign to cut her personal carbon footprint by 10% in 2010.
A Liberal Democrat move to sign the whole of Westminster up to the 10:10 campaign and cut greenhouse gas emissions from the government's estate and the public sector by 10% in 2010 was unfortunately defeated in the Commons.
The campaign, supported by the Liberal Democrats, asks businesses, organisations and individuals to promise to reduce their CO2 emissions and thereby pressure the government to commit the country to similar action.
Since its launch last month, over 35,000 people have joined. Businesses and organizations are also rushing to the cause including 3G Communications, KPMG and the chartered institute of management accountants. In total 51 councils across the country, which cover almost 9 million people have already signed up to the agreement.
Annette Brooke MP says "Climate change is a huge problem with not enough people taking the dramatic effects that global climate change will cause seriously. I am disappointed with the government's decision not to sign up to this agreement but I still ask that the public join me in support of this campaign."
During the debate, Simon Hughes, the Lib Dem climate change spokesman, said: "This is a bad day for parliament, Labour and the planet," adding that it was particularly damaging ahead of talks in Copenhagen's to strike a deal on climate change and addressing the urgent cuts in emissions that the IPCC say are necessary.
