Yesterday (3rd November) Annette Brooke MP attended an important meeting in London with the F40 Group. The group represents the 40 lowest funded education authorities and is aimed at dealing with the problem of unfair funding of children's education in many parts of the country.
Poole is 143rd lowest funded out of 151 local authorities and Dorset 129th lowest funded. For 2009-10 the guaranteed per pupil unit of funding for Poole pupils is £3860.22 and for Dorset £3937.57. This is against a national average of £4217.
Annette welcomed the fact that Dorset has been positively working within the F40 group and that she has at long last persuaded Poole to join the group.
She said 'it was an excellent conference and highlighted how working as a group has given councils the ability to jointly fund expert, technical representations on the funding formula which is so disadvantageous to us. Currently the formula is fixed until 2011, but new proposals will shortly be consulted upon and so it is important for the future of our children that out local councils are really working on this issue.'
Annette recently quizzed Ed Balls at the Select Committee for Children Schools and Families and was assured that the area cost adjustment aspect of the formula is being looked at. Currently Hampshire schools receive more money per pupil for their schools as they are judged to have higher costs than our schools. Annette said' this is quite ridiculous when you think the biggest expense is teachers' salaries and whilst they will be higher in London they will be the same in Hampshire. For Dorset, full consideration of the cost of providing education in a rural area must be taken into account.'
The f40 conference took place in Church Street, London and was attended by David Laws MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Children Schools and Families who spoke with Nick Gibb MP and Vernon Coaker MP the Schools and Learning Minister
