19% Jump in unemployment

February 17, 2010 2:07 PM

New figures released today by the Office of National Statistics show that the number of people claiming unemployment benefits in Mid Dorset and North Poole has risen by 19% in just one month. Across the country the figure has also risen, despite an expectation by economists that the number of people claiming unemployment benefit would fall by 10,000 in January.

1,317 were registered unemployed in January this year compared with 1,105 in December 2009. This accounts for 3.2% of the economically active population in the constituency.

Commenting, Annette Brooke MP said: "It's a frustrating indictment of this Government's economic policies that that unemployment has gone up yet again in the constituency.

'We need more action - both nationally and locally - that engages jobseekers, creates opportunities and prevents people from falling into the trap of unemployment. We can see that seasonal employment provides much needed work for people over Christmas but we want a more consistent approach in the area."

If you are a resident of the constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
