Equitable Life holders let down, again

March 3, 2010 12:00 AM

Sir John Chadwick's report into the Government's response to the failings at Equitable Life will not be published May 2010, after the general election and beyond most people's anticipation of an expected report in Spring 2010

The new date was given to Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, in response to parliamentary question she has been pressing the Treasury on. It indicates that the Government are trying to push the matter into the long grass with the hope that they will not be responsible for resolving the travesty come the summer.

Last year, the Government rejected several of the Parliamentary Ombudsman's findings into Equitable Life and Parliament, and policy holders alike have since been waiting for Sir John Chadwick to respond to the remaining matters.

More than 30,000 Equitable Life policyholders have died during the decade since it collapsed, and it is estimated that 15 more die every day. Regardless of that, the Government took six months to respond to the ombudsman's report and recommendations, during which time more than 2,500 policyholders died.

Commenting on the answer Annette said 'It is disgraceful that once again, the Government are avoiding the real issues at stake here. There are thousands of policy holders across Dorset who along with their savings, have lost confidence in the fact the Government will ever remedy the injustice.

'We will simply have to await Sir John's report with the hope that any new Government takes their responsibilities to the policy holders as seriously as they deserve.'

If you are a resident of the constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
