Annette Brooke MP this week attended the Breastfeeding Manifesto Coalition's National Breastfeeding Week parliamentary celebrations, where she joined over 190 other MPs in pledging her support to the Breastfeeding Manifesto. Annette has also agreed to be its new parliamentary champion, having supported the Manifesto since its launch in 2007.
Annette Brooke has pledged to continue to support initiatives to improve the number of babies breastfed in Mid Dorset and North Poole, and to support measures to increase the duration of breastfeeding to meet government guidelines. The Breastfeeding Manifesto sets out the 7 challenges and solutions to ensure that every child in the UK gets an equal chance to be as healthy as possible. The Department of Health and World Health Organisation recommend exclusive breastfeeding for at least the first six months of life, so the Manifesto outlines how that can be achieved.
This includes ensuring that all UK health services achieve UNICEF's baby friendly status and that mothers are supported to breastfeed on return to work and in public places.
Speaking after the event, Annette Brooke MP said: "I am delighted to be the new parliamentary champion for the Breastfeeding Manifesto Coalition, and I look forward to lending further support to their campaigns. It is essential that all parliamentarians are aware of the benefits of breastfeeding and its status as a powerful weapon in the fight against inequalities.
"We must seize opportunities to improve breastfeeding rates in the UK. In my work I have seen first hand the importance of ensuring that every mother can breastfeed her baby for as long as she wishes. Championing the Manifesto will be a step forward in raising awareness amongst my parliamentary colleagues of this important issue - and I hope that one day improved initiatives and services mean that all children have an equal chance to be healthy by being breastfed for longer."
