Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, is this week supporting Age UK's Falls Awareness Week. Annette, who recently broke her hip and wrist in a fall, tabled Early Day Motion 234 in Parliament to raise awareness of the dangers of falls for older people.
Over 220,000 people per year aged over 60 break bones due to a fall, and falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths in over 75s. There are specific programmes for improving strength and balance which can reduce the risk of falls by as much as 55 per cent and Age UK are highlighting the exercises and other measures which can be taken to prevent accidents during their Falls Awareness Week from 18 to 22 June 2012.
Annette Brooke said: "Having recently experienced a bad fall myself, I am only too aware of the impact on the individual and the cost to our National Health Service. I am very pleased to be supporting Age UK during their valuable Falls Awareness Week, which I hope will raise consciousness of the dangers of trips and falls to older people."
